What Is a Deuterium Lamp and What Is It Used for in Laboratories?

A deuterium lamp is a widely used ultraviolet (UV) light source in analytical laboratories. It is commonly installed in instruments such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) systems and UV-Visible spectrophotometers.
A deuterium lamp generates ultraviolet radiation by electrically exciting deuterium gas sealed inside a quartz envelope. Compared with tungsten-halogen lamps, which mainly emit visible light, deuterium lamps provide a stable and continuous spectrum in the 190–400 nm ultraviolet range, making them the standard light source for UV analysis.
Typical applications of deuterium lamps include:
Quantitative and qualitative analysis of organic compounds
Pharmaceutical, food, and environmental testing
Scientific research and quality control (QC) laboratories
In practice, any analytical technique involving UV absorbance measurement relies heavily on a deuterium lamp.
