How Does a Deuterium Lamp Work and Why Is It Ideal for UV Detection?

Release time:

2026-03-09

The operating principle of a deuterium lamp is based on gas discharge emission.

Inside the sealed quartz lamp, deuterium gas is excited by a high-voltage electrical discharge. This process ionizes the gas and forms a plasma, which emits a continuous ultraviolet spectrum.

Deuterium lamps are ideal for UV detection for several reasons:

Continuous UV Spectrum
The lamp provides a smooth and continuous output across the 190–400 nm range, which is essential for accurate quantitative analysis.

Strong Deep-UV Emission
Unlike visible light sources, deuterium lamps maintain sufficient intensity below 200 nm.

High Spectral Stability
Within its rated lifetime, the lamp offers relatively stable light output, supporting repeatable and reliable measurements.

For these reasons, deuterium lamps are the standard light source in HPLC UV detectors and UV-Vis spectrophotometers.
